RX-79[G] Ground Gundam | Mobile Suit Gundam the 8TH MS Team

This was a model project that took 3-4 weeks to create.

The Gundam Ground Type was one of the early prototypes for the Earth Federation's mobile suit mass production plan, produced in limited numbers before the recovery of the RX-78-2 Gundam's combat data. As its name suggests, it was designed solely for ground combat, and all space-use equipment, as well as the Core Block System, were omitted. This caused the Gundam Ground Type to be lighter, allowing it to rival the performance of the RX-78 while under gravity.

The RX79 Ground Type is unique to me, both in the design, and its source material. I never really enjoyed Mecha anime, until I was introduced to Gundam: The 8TH MS Team. The viewer follows a squad of pilots in their RX79's in their rugged fight for survival in the gritty environment of South East Asia's dense jungle in war. Doing what I always do, I took the design and tried to give it a 'realistic' look, while still staying close to the source material. To add to the lived in look to the machine, I added crew compartments, bags, and boxes to help sell the feeling of a 'real' warfare mecha.

Concerning the second image, a friend requested I do a special paintjob in the colors of a Internet musician, Hatsune Miku. I decided to go the extra mile and render out a fake box cover, that turned out so well, it inspired the other fake box cover images.

The RX-79[G] stands at 18 meters tall, weighing in at a large 70+ tons. The machine comes equipped with plenty of features for any military operation. Equipped by standard with its chest cannon, a beam saber, wide array of optics, mobility thrusters and a back brace for carrying cargo. Such cargo, can include the Jetpack (not modelled), or the Weapon Rack containing the 180mm cannon with ammunition. The machine has hard points on the hips, to holster additional ammunition for the optional 100MM Machine gun. For desperate measures, the operator can equip the last resort Beam Saber, located in the thighs in a covered hatch that swings open.
